At the Threshold

The threshold is lined in a single material that runs from pavement to counter, so the shop reads as continuous with the street it opens onto. Everything else follows from it, and the parts that appear elaborate are consequences of that single decision rather than additions to it.

What the drawings describe as a retail interior whose whole argument happens in the first two metres inside the door is, on site, simply the shape of the place — which is the point at which a scheme stops being a diagram.

The detail that carries it: the threshold is lined in a single material that runs from pavement to counter, so the shop reads as continuous with the street it opens onto. It is repeated throughout, which is what keeps the building consistent rather than merely coherent.

“What we were after was a retail interior whose whole argument happens in the first two metres inside the door — nothing more complicated, and nothing less rigorous.”
