The block is cut by a passage on the ground floor, which brings the gardens into view from the street and shortens the walk home. Everything else follows from it, and the parts that appear elaborate are consequences of that single decision rather than additions to it.

Exterior Perspective

What the drawings describe as an apartment building holding a long street edge without turning its back on the gardens behind is, on site, simply the shape of the place — which is the point at which a scheme stops being a diagram.
The detail that carries it: the block is cut by a passage on the ground floor, which brings the gardens into view from the street and shortens the walk home. It is repeated throughout, which is what keeps the building consistent rather than merely coherent.

“What we were after was an apartment building holding a long street edge without turning its back on the gardens behind — nothing more complicated, and nothing less rigorous.”
